Benjamin Maries

B.Maries is a film photographer who documents the complex humanity existing within the grit of the city. His work searches for the poetic beauty in overlooked moments, capturing the daily life of urban inhabitants with a distinct street-level intimacy.

This approach is informed by a deep academic background, including a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from UCLA and undergraduate studies in sociology. This critical framework provides a unique narrative capacity to his images, which explore how individuals experience and interact with urban spaces.

His process is a deliberate act of presence, invoking the meandering spirit of the Parisian flâneur and the Situationists. For B.Maries, this wandering is vital. It allows him to follow his intuition through the urban landscape, translating complex internal emotions into external manifestations of light and shadow. He recognizes that through this intuitive process, he becomes an intrinsic feature of the work, his own presence embedded in every image.

This synthesis of the academic and the personal results in clear, compelling work. His photographs aim to give viewers insight into the overlooked beauty of the city and bring the experiences of the humans within the frame into the viewer's own perspective of urban life.
